Dhaka: Lufthansa is offering COVID-19 testing to passengers flying to and from Frankfurt Airport in Germany, allowing travellers to get the results within hours and avoid quarantines at destinations they are flying to.

The airline group has joined hands with Fraport, the operator of Frankfurt Airport, and Centogene, a German commercial-stage company focused on rare diseases, to roll out this service. The exclusive partnership starts immediately and is expected to run until July 31, 2021.

The partners said the first walk-in testing solution in Germany will serve as "a blueprint to opening international borders", aiding passengers with prior COVID-19 testing that many countries now require in the wake of the pandemic.

The service offers travellers "a comfortable opportunity to test themselves for flights abroad or a stay in Germany to avoid quarantine,” said Dr. Björn Becker, Senior Director, Product Management, Ground and Digital Services, Lufthansa Group.

Passengers flying to or from Frankfurt Airport with Lufthansa will be able to perform the test at a sampling centre conveniently located near the main terminal. This can either be completed the day before travelling or with a fast-track solution the same day before departure.

All results are delivered to the passenger via a secure digital platform and connected to their ticket – providing secured clearance for passengers flying to countries with entrance restrictions. Additionally, passengers can opt into an ID confirmation service, assuring authorities that the passengers’ identities correspond with the test results.

Lufthansa customers wishing to use a fast-track test will need to pay EUR 139 (USD 156) at the Frankfurt airport while a slower test, which provides a result in six to eight hours, is also available for EUR 59, according to reports. An additional EUR 9 will tie the verified result to the passport details of Lufthansa customers.
